Mexico is a large and diverse country with stunning scenery, deep rooted traditions, beautiful beaches and ruins from ancient civilisations. Whatever sort of holiday you are looking for you are likely to be able to find it in Mexico. Highlights include:

Mexico City, the main point of entry to Mexico. Once a vast Aztec city, it was largely destroyed and rebuilt in the sixteenth century. It has a beautiful plaza with both fine colonial buildings and the Aztec Templo Mayor. Here you can take a day trip to the Mayan ruins at Teotihuacan and spend time visiting Frieda Kahlo’s house.
Made up of twenty canyons, Copper Canyon is in the heart of the Mexican wilderness and the scenery is spectacular. Most people choose to visit by the famous Chihuahua al Pacifico train either as a one day trip or using the train to hop on and off and visit indigenous villages, old missionary stations, look out points and taking short treks.
Oaxaca, a city south east of Mexico City has Spanish buildings, vibrant indigenous markets and numerous fiestas. The nearby site of Mitla is one of the best places to see Day of the Dead festivities.
Visit the famous Mayan ruins at Tulum, and Chichen Itza.
Chiapas is a rural state blessed with lush jungles, Mayan ruins and waterfalls. It is home to the romantic jungle enshrouded site of Palenque with its soaring pyramids and temples.
Surrounded by cool mountain air and pine forests San Cristobal is a colourful colonial city with cobbled streets and labyrinthine markets.
Mexico’s Pacific coastline in Baja California has spectacular scenery and lovely beaches. Its capital La Paz is a great place for watersports and there are a number of other charming coastal towns good for relaxation.
Perhaps the biggest attraction Baja California has to offer are the whales. The nutrient rich Sea of Cortez has perhaps the largest and most varied whale population in the world. The Pacific lagoons are also home to calving grey whales which migrate there January to March each year.
Fly to Cancun instead of Mexico City and visit some of the more laid back (compared with Cancun) beach resorts such as Tulum with its own Mayan ruins and Isla Holbox an island with beautiful shallows, white beaches and a bohemian vibe.
